BFF (Backend For Frontend) Layer Development with Node.js
The middleman that makes the frontend fast and simple: it gathers data from a dozen APIs into one request, caches it and shapes it to the needed format.
A BFF (Backend For Frontend) is a dedicated server layer between the interface and all the other APIs. The frontend requests the whole "cart screen", and the BFF fetches products, prices, stock and discounts itself — in parallel and with caching. Without a BFF, the frontend would make 5–7 requests and stitch the responses together in the browser.
We develop BFF on Node.js: aggregation and parallel requests, caching, shared TypeScript types with the frontend, a WebSocket gateway for real time. The frontend gets one stable contract, and changes in internal services don't break the interface.

What you get
- 01One request per screenScreen data is assembled on the server in parallel — the frontend waits for one fast response instead of a chain.
- 02Gentle contractThe frontend talks to a clean BFF API; internal services change without breaking the interface.
- 03Cache and speedResponses are cached at the right level, heavy sources are polled less often — screens open faster.
- 04Aggregation and processingData merging, enrichment from the database, format normalization — all assembly logic in one place.
- 05Real timeWebSocket and SSE: order statuses, live cursors and notifications arrive instantly.
- 06Single control pointAuthorization, rate limits and request logging in one layer — security and debugging get simpler.
How we work
- 1
Analysis and planning
We analyze the app's screens and data sources, counting requests without a BFF.
- 2
Prototyping and design
We design BFF contracts per screen and the caching scheme.
- 3
Development
We implement the layer, types and WebSocket channels, and connect the frontend.
- 4
Testing
We measure screen speed before and after, and set up monitoring.
- 5
Launch and support
We deploy next to the frontend, document and hand over to the team.

The estimate depends on the number of data sources and screens; the layer often pays for itself by speeding up frontend development.

Frequently asked questions
Direct calls mean request waterfalls, duplicated assembly logic on the client and tight coupling with someone else's contracts. A BFF removes all of it: the interface receives exactly what it needs to render, in one request.
